As a civil engineer, I constantly study structures — how much load they can bear, at what point they bend, and at what point they break. But recently, I began studying a different kind of structure altogether: human relationships.
Relationships in the Sangam Era
Sangam literature — the Akam (interior) and Puram (exterior) traditions — depicts love and human relationships with extraordinary nuance. In texts like Akananuru and Kuruntokai, love is not merely an emotion — it is a philosophy.
"What could my mother be to yours? What kin is my father to yours anyway? And how did you and I meet ever? But in love our hearts have mingled as red earth and pouring rain."
These lines reveal the depth of relationships. When two souls meet, their family background, caste, or social status does not matter — only love matters. The Sangam poets understood something that modern psychology is only now confirming: that genuine human connection transcends social constructs.
Medieval Tamil Society
After the Sangam era, the Bhakti movement began viewing relationships through a new lens. Andal's Tiruppavai, Manikkavasagar's Tiruvacakam — all used divine love as a metaphor for human love. The relationship between the devotee and the divine mirrored the deepest human longing: to be known completely and loved unconditionally.
Colonial Era and Modernisation
During British rule, Tamil society underwent enormous changes. The education system changed, the economic structure changed, and most importantly — the family structure changed. The joint family system, which had been the bedrock of Tamil social life for millennia, began to fracture under the pressures of urbanisation and industrialisation.
As an engineer, I see this as a structural change. When the foundation of a building changes, everything above it must be reconfigured — or it will crack.
Relationships in the Digital Age
Today, we live in a paradoxical world. We are more "connected" than ever before — yet we feel more lonely than ever. A 2023 study by the American Psychological Association found that despite record levels of digital communication, rates of loneliness have doubled over the past two decades.
We have hundreds of contacts in WhatsApp groups, but not one friend to call in a crisis. Thousands of Instagram followers, but no real conversation. We have optimised for breadth at the expense of depth.
Yield Point / Engineering Perspective: The Yield Point
In structural engineering, the "yield point" is the point at which a material begins to change permanently. Before that point, it bends and returns. After that point, it never returns to its original form.
I believe modern relationships have reached their yield point. Digital technology, urbanisation, and individualistic lifestyles have together altered the fundamental structure of human connection. The question is not whether this change has happened — it has. The question is: what do we build next?
What Must We Rebuild?
The Sangam poets teach us a lesson: genuine relationship takes time, requires attention, and demands vulnerability. These are precisely the things that the digital age has made harder.
When we reconstruct a building, we do not simply copy the old form. But the fundamental principles — strength, flexibility, durability — we must follow. The same applies to relationships. We cannot return to the Sangam era. But we can reclaim its principles:
- Depth over breadth — fewer, deeper connections rather than hundreds of shallow ones
- Presence over performance — being genuinely present rather than performing connection on social media
- Vulnerability over invulnerability — the willingness to be known, not just seen
- Continuity over convenience — relationships that survive difficulty, not just those that are easy
Conclusion
From the Sangam era to the digital age, the form of human relationships may have changed. But the deepest need has not: the desire to be known, the need to be loved, and the joy of belonging to one another.
As an engineer, I know: no structure stands without the right foundation. The same is true of human life — without deep relationships, everything else becomes meaningless.
